Objective To investigate the relationship between heperhomocysteinemia (Hcy) and stroke. Methods 102 patients with stroke (66 with cerebral infarction and 36 with cerebral hemorrhage) were included as the case group, while 102 subjects without stroke matched with the case group on gender, age and race were selected as control group. Hcy were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography and fluorescence detection. Levels of folate, Vitamin B12, blood glucose and Plasma lipid were measured as well. Results Plasma level of Hcy in case group was significantly higher than that in control group[(20±9)μmol/L vs (9±6)μmol/L, P<0.01], but it showed no significant difference between patients with cerebral infarction and patients with cerebral hemorrhage(P>0.05). Significant negative correlation were observed between plasma level of Hcy and plasma level of folate, as well as vitamin B12. Based on Logistic regression model, the odds ratio(OR) of hyperhomocysteinemia was 4.875 (95%CI 1.902-8.552) for stroke. Conclusion Hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for strok. Deficiency of plasma folate and vitamin B12 may be one of reasons of hyperhomocysteinemia.

Objective To investigate the protection effect of irbesartan on cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs) impaired by lysophosphatidylcho-line(LPC).Methods HUVECs were cultured in vitro. The study was designated to 8 groups: (1)normal control, (2)low-concentration LPC group (10μg/L), (3)middle-concentration LPC group(20μg/L), (4) high-concentration LPC group (40μg/L), (5)Irb control group containing LPC(20μg/L),(6)low-concentration Irb group(10-7μmol/L),(7) middle-concentration Irb group(10-6μmol/L) ,(8) high-concentration Irb group(10-5μmol/L). Expression of angiotensin II (ATII) and ATII type1 receptor(AT1R), AT type2 receptor(AT2R) mRNA were observed by radio-immunity and RT-PCR respectively. Production of nitrogen monoxidum (NO), activity of nitricoxide synthase (NOS) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined by chromatometry. Also the intervention effect of Irb was observed. Results Compared with normal control group, LPC could significantly up-regulate the expression of ATII and AT1R mRNA and decrease the expression of NO and the activity of NOS,SOD in a dose-dependent manner; Irb could significantly increase the expression of NO and the activity of NOS and SOD.Conclusion Irb could partly protect HUVECs function against the LPC-induced damage.

Objective Intracranial capillary telangiectasia (ICT) is a rare disease with few clinical reports. Based on an analysis of two possible clinical cases at our hospital and a review of the literature, we hope to improve awareness of ICT, as well as the ability of diagnosis and treatment. Methods We report on two possible cases of cerebral hemispheric capillary telangiectasia treated at our hospital between 2000 and 2007 and their clinical, imaging, pathology, and postoperative data. Results Both patients were treated surgically with good outcomes. Based on preoperative imaging, intraoperative observations, and postoperative pathology reports, we believe these two cases to be consistent with ICT.Conclusion MRI and CT could play a supportive role in making a differential diagnosis of ICT, but the final diagnosis should be made with the aid of pathological findings. When symptoms and imaging suggest cerebral hemispheric capillary telangiectasia, surgery may be considered as a viable option. However, surgical removal should be complete, and not a partial excision or biopsy.

Objective To evaluate the impact of smoking for the population’s life span and the relationship between smoking and the incidence or subtypes of stroke. Methods The community with population of 20 000 was selected in Beijing City, from which 5441 (age≥35 years) people were surveyed after random cluster sampling. Then the second cross-sectional survey after 10 years was finished. Results The incidence of stroke in 5441 people was 668.15/100 000 person-years. In accordance with the morbidity of stroke during three groups of total stroke, ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke the order was: smoking group(798.56/100 000 person-years )> quit smoking group(754.71/100000 person-years)>no smoking group(591.38/100 000 person-years), respectively, and showing that the impact of smoking for ischemic stroke and total stroke were more clear. Smoking group survival curve decreased significantly. Conclusion Smoking has constituted the independent risk factors for stroke. Smoking can increase the incidence of stroke as well as reduce the population survival curve and affect the life expectancy. In addition, the old and middle-aged people were high-risk groups which prone to stroke so that they could benefit from smoke-quitting .

Anticardiolipin antibody is the typical antibody of antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, and it has much thing to do with thrombogenesis development and ischemic cerebrovascular disease. Compared with antiphospholipid antibody negative cerebral infarction patients with anticardiolipin antibody positive are prone to occure in young woman, cerebral infarction are multi-focus and attends to recurrence, plaques in tunica intima vasorum are apt to hypoechoic. Anticardiolipin antibody also has something to do with blood fat, fibrinogen and tumor necrosis factor, and the high titre of anticardiolipin antibody maybe concerned with the patient’s autoimmunity. Anticoagulation should be the chief therapy means.

Carotid arteriosclerosis is one of the most important reasons of stroke. Hemodynamics play an important role in the development of the carotid arteriosclerosis, which is proved by preferential localization of the arteriosclerosis plaques at certain regions such as branches, bifurctions or curves. Wall shear stress is considered to be most correlative with the athrogenesis and rupture of the arteriosclerosis plaques. This article reviews the measurements of wall shear stress, the role played by wall shear stress on the development and progress of the carotid arteriosclerosis, as well as the influence on the characteristic of carotid.

Post-stroke depression (PSD) is the most common neuropsychiatric complication after stroke, which was believed to be responsible for the increased morbidity and mortality associated with stroke. Reported evidences demonstrated that PSD was correlated with the lesion location as well as the severity of stroke, and was due to the multiple biopsychosocial factors. Controlled clinical trails have shown that antidepressants are efficient in the prevention and treatment of PSD. In this review we will provide an overview of several important issues on this field.
